"Built without permission, by skateboarders and later sanctioned by the city, Burnside is the preeminent example of action.... Like a magnifying glass in the sun, Burnside can witness a concentration of skill level unmatched anywhere. You can see crazy, crazy things there. Go, watch, learn, be humbled, excited and inspired. It is amazing."

Early Burnside Photos Found

Thursday, March 17
My wife was cleaning up our desk the other day and came across a bunch of really early Burnside photos. I haven't seen these in years and am amazed at how much the area has changed in the past 14 years. When you look at the photos, if you have ever been to Burnside, you will notice the difference right away. If not, trust me, there are no open fields around here anymore.

I scanned the photos last night and they came out OK. They are pretty old and hadn't been kept anywhere safe, so there are some scratches and such, but nothing too bad. I also didn't optimize them for the web, so they may load a little slow the first time through. When you look at them, notice the rebar sticking out where a platform should be on the original curb quarter-pipe. It was make or break back then, and I was broken many times.

I thought these photos would be the perfect opportunity to give you a sneak peek at what I'm working on for the big move. What big move? Once I get the new site put together, I will be shutting this web address down and moving it to our new home at burnsideskatepark.org. I was really close to having it finished up last month, I just had a bit of content to fill in, when my hard drive crashed. I lost the whole thing, HTML, images, everything. So I've started again and this time have it saved on two separate computers so that it won't happen again. Anyhow, for the new site I have created a photo viewer rather than using a thumbnail page for photos. This is a glimpse at what is to come. So check out the new....

Let me know what you think of this. I would like any and all input about it so I know if something is broken or not. Also, if you have any really old Burnside photos and would like to add them, send me an e-mail and we can set it up.

That's it. Go skate!

Slam City Jam

Monday, March 14
For those of you who don't know, the Slam City Jam is a yearly pro contest that is held in Vancouver, BC and attracts the best skaters from around the world. It also brings a lot of great skaters through Portland on their trek north which makes for some good sessions at the local parks. The Slam City Jam has historically been held in or around May, but due to a change in organizers, the date has been rolled back to August 26-28.

The reason I bring this up is because, just in my last post, I mentioned that the Oregon Trifecta was going to be held in August, or more specifically, August 26-28. What does this mean for the Trifecta? Maybe the Trifecta will be more of a locals contest. I'll update if there are any changes to the dates of the Trifecta.

By the way, what are your thoughts on the Oregon Trifecta being held at Burnside? It's only one day, but it is also Burnside. Burnside has never been much of a contest park. I think there have been 2, maybe 3, contests at the park in its 14 year history. So I'm curious what everyone thinks about it. Cool, not cool, whatever. Just click on the comments link below this post and chime in with your 2 cents.

That's it. Go skate!
