Sign of the Times
Tuesday, July 5
A couple of weeks ago a new sign was hung at Burnside. There has been a sign hanging at the park for the past 13 years and this is the first time it has been updated. The new sign gives a quick history of the park and then a few simple rules.
Here's what the sign says:"Welcome to the Burnside Skateboard Park. The Burnside Skateboard Park is a historical park that was started in 1990 by skateboarders trying to improve skateboarding for their community. At first, small banks were constructed against the large slanted wall. From that point in time through the early 90's, additional sections were added which started to form some of the features that can be seen here today. The skateboarders transformed this area from a lot full of garbage into a prospering place to skate. Although the construction was originally unauthorized, the City of Portland officially recognized the park in 1992, and with strong support from the skaters and the community, we received permission to continue construction. The park has evolved through the years due to continuous volunteer work and dontated materials into what the park is today. The Park is still maintained by skateboarders, and it has become an ongoing project.
By skating and enjoying Burnside, we all agree to help do the following:
Dispose of all trash into provided receptacles (even if it isn't yours),
Keep all drugs and alcohol out of and away from the park,
Be respectful to all neighboring businesses and fellow riders,
Discourage all activities except skateboarding
(No Loitering, No Bikes, No Scooters, No Graffiti, etc.),
Help Self-Police the park (within a reasonable manner),
and Report crime to the proper authorities.
